Half-time in sight in the Vendée Globe: Boris Herrmann is praised as "Malizia MacGyver"

The last few days have been exhausting for Boris, who spent a whole night on deck carrying out urgent repairs. He also demonstrated a supreme talent for improvisation when he repaired the suspension of a foil, earning him the nickname “Malizia-MacGyver” on social media in reference to his boat, the Malizia - Seaexplorer, and the cult technical genius, MacGyver. The following day, on the recommendation of other sailors who had also reported problems with the same type, he made an adjustment to his J2 jib. This repair forced him to sail at low speed for two hours, but safety on board is an absolute priority. Out of an initial 40 contestants, two have already had to withdraw from the Vendée Globe, due to damage to the boat and an ankle injury respectively. Boris Herrmann is far from hoisting the proverbial white flag. Despite sleepless nights, the sailor from Hamburg remains confident.

He is still a long way off the fifth place he achieved at his Vendée Globe premiere in 2020. Boris was previously considered the favourite to win and his new boat, the ‘Malizia - Seaexplorer’, was regarded as the ideal yacht for the rough waters of the Southern Ocean. However, there were also fewer competitors in the 2020/21 Vendée Globe, as only 33 sailors took part in the regatta. Boris recently sailed past Cape Leeuwin, the most south-westerly point of the Australian mainland. The next milestone is Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America. He wants to pass this point by 1 January 2025 at the latest. After that, it’s back across the Atlantic to the starting point at Les Sables d’Olonne – but Boris still has a long way to go before he can set foot on French soil again.

Christmas at sea

Christmas is approaching, but on board the Malizia - Seaexplorer, Boris hasn’t had time to get into the festive spirit yet. Although cinnamon biscuits and an advent calendar are part of his very minimal equipment, everyday life at sea is still characterised by tough conditions and strategic decisions. Another big storm is expected next week. Afterwards, Boris will hopefully have a few quieter hours, and perhaps even time to enjoy some Christmas cheer.

We wish Boris Herrmann the best weather conditions for the remaining long and challenging journey and hope he can make up more nautical miles and that his boat does not suffer any damage. We know he has the know-how and the mental strength for a place on the winners’ podium!
